|  | How Christmas decorations influenced my career: The Rancho Bernardo Story
“As a kid, I just loved Christmas. As I sat in the back seat looking out the car window of our 56’ Pontiac at beautifully decorated poles, wreaths and garlands I couldn’t help thinking that this was the work of Santa’s helpers and I hoped that I have been good enough to get that bike I wanted. I also remember in great detail how stores would decorate their windows and I thought that was the perfect job!”
As our business grew and I got older, my childhood dreams never went away. As our Plant business grew and the Christmas division took off we began looking for new ways to increase our Christmas market.
With that said, now I want to take this opportunity to talk to you about strip malls. A strip mall is a local small shopping center with one large market, one large drug store and 25 small shops around them. Not the big box stores like Kmart, just the neighborhood shopping centers by your home where you go for groceries.
In San Diego we actually did install close to 50 strip malls each season. They were incredibly profitable and easy to sign up. And; I always loved the idea that children were looking out their parents car window and dreaming of their Christmas like I had. Here is one client that comes to mind:
We called on this one center about their strip mall and they informed us they had 10 locations and were accepting bids for all 10! I couldn’t believe it! I drove to each center and made a rough blueprint of each with my ideas. Then I called and asked him what his budget was. He sort of himmed and hawed and said, “Why don’t you just give me your ideas?” I explained, “ I have driven to each center and have several ideas for each one, I need to know what direction to go as far as cost before I can go any further. Mr. Thomas, we do jobs for $1500.00 all the way up to $10,000 I really need a budget.” He was so impressed that I went to each center that he gave me a budget for each location. I was shocked because it was much higher than I would have thought. Thank goodness I hadn’t offered my price first, it would have been so much less than he offered to pay! Remember, “Human nature is to underestimate our value.”
After the first year he sign consecutive 3-year contracts for each location. He loved our decorations and referred us to many other clients. After 6 years, I had never actually met him, only talked on the phone and faxed contracts back and forth.
As I was supervising the removal of decorations at one of the locations, I saw a good looking guy getting out of this beautiful green jaguar with another man, and he was opening one of the empty spaces with a set of keys. I immediately thought, “Maybe that’s him”. I drove up, honked and said, “Are you John?” He recognized my voice, strolled over and shook my hand and said, “Pamela, I was beginning to think we would never meet in person.” This man had generated over $100,000.00 for my business over the past 6 years and I had never even met him!
