My biggest Christmas Lesson


     Over the years we tried lots of different ways of decorating quickly and efficiently.  There’s a fine line between overly decorated and decorating just enough.  Clients wanted festive but not religious.  This made designing easy: bells, balls, bows and stars.  Clients loved this simple but elegant design, so for the next 25 years this became one of our simplest tree “recipes”.

 

     Even if I didn’t do the decorating, I felt it was important to review each design and give my final seal of approval.  After all, that’s what clients were paying for, right?  Boy was I wrong!

 

     We were just swamped during the holidays, and getting bigger each year.  I sent out a crew to decorate a series of office buildings downtown that were managed by one company.  I was delighted when we got a faxed reference that same day letting us know how delighted they were with our team of decorators.  They just raved about how professional they had been, how great all their buildings looked, and how they were looking forward to locking in a long-term contract!  I couldn’t have been happier.

 

     The following day I went to visit each location to see how everything looked.  I was shocked, utterly shocked. I thought the decorations looked awful, the balls were too big, the colors were clashing and, well I just hated everything about well, everything!  But as I sat there slumped in a chair, with a shocked look on my face, I learned a very valuable lesson I would like to share with you now:  “They never knew they could have had better, and they were happy with what they got!”

 

     As I look back all these years later, I realize this lesson has served me well! It freed me to let employees do their work and to trust that the client would be happy.  Sure I could have done a better job, but that’s not really important since I’m the only one who knew that.  My staff was professional, the design was festive, and more importantly, the client was happy.  The next year we DOUBLED our business and it was all because I had learned how to let go.
